Defining Manhood for the Next Generation Report from Joyful Heart

Hampton Barringer Luzak has served as a creative director’s assistant at the BBDO advertising agency and both a producer and on-air reporter at MSNBC. In addition, Hampton B Luzak has a history of philanthropic support for charities such as the Joyful Heart Foundation.

A national nonprofit that serves victims of child abuse and both domestic and sexual violence, Joyful Heart spearheads a broad spectrum of programs and initiatives. To fight against these scourges, the organization stresses the importance of engaging with men and investigating their attitudes about being a “good” or “real” man.

Launched in coordination with the 2018 National Summit on Adolescent and Young Male Health, the “Defining Manhood for the Next Generation” report carries the subtitle “Exploring Young Men’s Perceptions of Gender Roles and Violence.” Employing survey-based research, this report found that the defining characteristics of manhood and masculinity have changed.

All young men surveyed agreed that “real men” treat women respectfully. Furthermore, only 18 percent of respondents agreed that men will lose out if women get more rights, and only 11 percent believe that gender equality benefits women alone.
