Tips for Long-Distance Cycling

With a multifaceted career and experience in various fields such as media and marketing, Hampton Barringer Luzak now spends her time renovating historic homes. A Wyoming resident, Hampton Luzak enjoys skiing and bicycling in her free time.

Riding a bicycle is a type of outdoor sport that requires little energy while it gives the same results as other forms of exercise. Cycling long distances is an excellent way athletes can push themselves beyond their comfort zone.

To begin with, athletes do long-distance cycling competitively. In such cases, they must build up mileage gradually rather than going all out at the outset. Although it takes longer, it is worthwhile, and athletes will see a significant improvement in their cycling and the amount of time they can ride. It’s also critical to strengthen their base fitness to prepare their body for longer rides and avoid injury.

Secondly, cyclists are advised to limit their protein and fat intake before going on a long-distance ride. Proteins take a little longer to digest and can add to the body’s workload. By eating nutritious grains and fruit before riding, the body’s glycogen levels get replenished faster.

Long rides can cause aches and pains. To minimize this, cyclists should change their hand placement regularly and shrug for 5 to 10 seconds to relax their neck and shoulders. They can also stand up and take one foot off the pedal to straighten their leg.

The ASPCA’s Animal Shelter and Rescue Grants

A talented creative professional, Hampton Barringer Luzak has worked on a large variety of projects during her career. For example, her work as a creative director’s assistant with the marketing firm BBDO led to her involvement in the creation of iconic advertising campaigns for Pepsi and Visa. Away from her work, Hampton Luzak is a staunch supporter of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

One of North America’s first humane societies, the ASPCA operates on the belief that all animals are entitled to respectful and kind treatment from humans. To facilitate the growth of this belief, the ASPCA operates several grant programs, including its Animal Shelter and Rescue Grant (ASRG).

These grants aim to reduce the number of animals entering shelters, while increasing the number that find stable homes. The ASPCA awards its ASRG grants to organizations that operate relocation programs that move animals from areas that have low demand into areas that feature low animal supply and high demand for pets. The grants also facilitate the implementation of neutering and spaying programs, in addition to providing scholarships for the training of animal welfare specialists. The ASPCA also provides grant funding to specific programs, such as the ASPCA Northern Tier Shelter Initiative.
